How Jannik Sinner Can Reclaim World No. 1 Spot From Carlos Alcaraz

6 Min Read

The 2025 ATP season is heading for a blockbuster finish as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner prepare for one last duel in the race to finish as the year-end World No. 1.

After a season defined by their rivalry and brilliance on tennis’ grandest stages, the world’s top two players arrive at the Paris Masters with a difference of just 840 points.

A Rivalry Defining a Generation

The 2025 season has been dominated by two men who have elevated each other’s games to new heights. Between them, Alcaraz and Sinner have captured all four Grand Slam titles this year, meeting in three of those finals- at Roland-Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

Alcaraz triumphed in Paris and New York, while Sinner claimed his maiden Wimbledon crown and defended his Australian Open title.

The Spaniard reclaim the World No. 1 ranking after taking the US Open crown with a four-set victory. Since then, the duel has not let up!

Momentum Shifts in Vienna With Jannik Sinner’s Victory

After a brief setback at the Shanghai Masters, where Sinner retired in the third round, the Italian bounced back in emphatic fashion in Vienna.
Overcoming cramps and a spirited Alexander Zverev in a three-set thriller, Sinner claimed his fourth title of the year and trimmed Alcaraz’s lead to just 840 points.

“It was such a difficult match,” Sinner said after the win. “I just tried to stay mentally strong, keep fighting, and make the right choices at the right time.”

The Vienna title has reignited his hopes of returning to the top spot- at least temporarily- ahead of the final ATP Masters 1000 event of the season.

Paris Masters: The Pivotal Week

The equation for Sinner is simple- if not easy.
To return to World No. 1, he must win the Paris Masters and hope Alcaraz does not reach the semifinals.

Alcaraz, who begins his campaign against Cameron Norrie in the second round, has 100 points to defend after a round-of-16 exit last year. Sinner, who did not play in Paris in 2024, has no points to defend and could gain the full 1,000-point haul.

That creates a potential swing of 1,100 points, enough for the Italian to leapfrog his rival at the top of the ATP Rankings- at least until the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

But Alcaraz controls his own destiny. A run to the semifinals or better would guarantee he keeps the No. 1 ranking heading into Turin, no matter what Sinner does in Paris.

Turin: The Decider

Even if Sinner does snatch back the No. 1 spot in Paris, the battle would be far from over.

At the ATP Finals, Sinner will defend 1,500 points from his unbeaten run to the 2024 title, while Alcaraz has just 200 points to defend after a group-stage exit last year.

That means a potential 1,300-point swing in Alcaraz’s favor before the first ball is hit in Turin.

For Sinner to finish 2025 as year-end No. 1, he may need to win both Paris and Turin, and possibly remain undefeated at the Finals- a monumental but not impossible task.

Numbers Game: The Scenarios

  • If Alcaraz reaches the Paris semifinals: He guarantees staying World No. 1 for now.
  • If Sinner wins Paris and Alcaraz falls before the semifinals: Sinner reclaims No. 1 next Monday.
  • If Sinner wins both Paris and Turin (undefeated): He can still overtake Alcaraz in the year-end standings- but only if the Spaniard falls early in both events.
  • If Alcaraz reaches the Paris final or makes the Turin semis: He’s virtually assured to finish 2025 as year-end No. 1.

A Season to Remember

Regardless of who finishes on top, 2025 has underscored the rise of a new golden era in men’s tennis. Alcaraz and Sinner have combined for seven titles, four Grand Slams, and countless unforgettable encounters- a rivalry built not on animosity, but mutual respect and ambition.

Alcaraz, already a six-time Grand Slam champion at just 22, has called this “the best season I’ve ever had so far.

Sinner, 24, who spent 65 consecutive weeks as World No. 1 before yielding the position in September, says he’s “hungry to get it back.”

With the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals still to come, tennis fans are guaranteed a thrilling climax- one that could see history written in the final weeks of the season.

Projected Year-End No. 1 Odds (as of Oct 28, 2025)

  • Carlos Alcaraz– 70% (favored due to ranking cushion & lower points to defend)

  •  Jannik Sinner– 30% (needs perfection in Paris and Turin)
