The 2025 SheBelieves cup, took place from February 20 – 26 and  featured the world’s top-ranked U.S. Women’s National Team, Japan (#7 in the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings), Australia (#15) and Colombia (#21) as the competition returned to its traditional six-game, three matchday format after being played in a four-game, two-date format last year due to the new FIFA windows in years that feature the Olympic Games.

The US Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) were the defending champion, with Japan, Australia and Colombia featuring in the invitational football tournament. Games are held nationwide, across California, Texas, and Arizona.

Japan, who needed just a draw to win the SheBelieves Cup, went one step further on Wednesday night in San Diego, prevailing 2-1 to become just the fourth different nation to win a trophy in the competition’s ten-year existence.

Yuka Momiki took advantage of some careless USWNT defense to score just minutes into the game. In response, the USWNT equalized through a spectacular goal by Ally Sentnor, which was her second goal in as many starts for the national team.

With a 2-1 victory Wednesday night in the SheBelieves Cup title game, Japan gave the United States their first defeat under coach Emma Hayes, thanks to a goal from Toko Koga early in the second half.

“Our goals are beyond just the SheBelieves,” a disappointed Hayes told TNT after the match. “I’m not going to say I like losing, I don’t, but there’s no disgrace being beaten by a team that between them have 800 caps … let’s have perspective. It’s important to be calm at this moment.”

Japan made sure they stood out as the team to beat right from the beginning of this event. They had beaten Australia and Colombia, scoring four goals each time, to guarantee they would have the goal differential over the USWNT going into this final. In the end, that was irrelevant because Japan won without worrying about a tie.
