India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah is “unlikely” to be rested for the deciding Asia Cup 2025 Super Four match against Bangladesh. Bumrah, India’s top fast bowler, remains the pillar of the team as they strive for a spot in the tournament final.
Jasprit Bumrah Set to Play Against Bangladesh
Despite demands for rest, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to feature against Bangladesh unless India qualify for the final of the Asia Cup prior to this match. The only time that Bumrah might be rested is when Pakistan defeat Sri Lanka and India defeats Bangladesh, thus securing India’s qualification for the final with one game to spare.
It’s highly improbable that we go into the final match knowing that we’ve qualified,” said ten Doeschate. “So I’d say it’s unlikely that he’ll get a break. We’re going to select our strongest team for each game. He clearly is part of that picture.”
Workload Management Before the Upcoming Test Match
Bumrah’s appearance in the Asia Cup is also seen as worthwhile preparation for India’s next Test series against the West Indies, beginning October 2 in Ahmedabad. India has yet to name the squad, but Bumrah is likely to appear in red-ball cricket.
It’s very good practice as far as workload management goes. He’s going to bowl 25-26 overs during match and training sessions this week, which is a decent number before the Test,” ten Doeschate added.
Bumrah’s Contribution During the Asia Cup 2025 So Far
Jasprit Bumrah has been India’s first choice bowler in the powerplay, going three overs at the beginning of the innings many a time, which has made his job crucial and demanding. In the Super Four contest against Pakistan, Bumrah conceded 45 runs in his four overs. Bumrah and Hardik Pandya missed the optional practice session before the Bangladesh encounter.
Despite some costly overs, Bumrah’s contribution at the beginning of the overs has been key. But India’s death-over woes are still an issue, with the side being the second-most costly team at the death in this Asia Cup.
“He’s doing a very difficult job. Very few bowlers bowl all three powerplay overs in this format. It’s hard work, but it’s the right level of work leading up to the Test match,” opined ten Doeschate.
Suryakumar Yadav Seeks Death-Over Support
India captain Suryakumar Yadav has admitted there is a place for other bowlers to play their part in the death overs, particularly with the 2026 T20 World Cup looming. Bumrah’s early-over dominance must be supplemented by stronger late-over solutions.
Sanju Samson Backed to Succeed at No. 5
India’s coach also expressed backing for Sanju Samson, who has failed in the middle order while excelling as an opener. With Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma securing the top, Samson has been relegated but is still settling into the role.
In his last two Asia Cup innings, Samson has scored 56 (his slowest T20I fifty) and 13. His T20I record clearly shows a performance gap between opening and batting lower down:
Sanju Samson in T20Is for India:
| Inngs | Runs | Avg | SR | 100s/50s | Bnd % | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opening | 17 | 522 | 32.62 | 178.76 | 3/1 | 28.8% |
| Other positions | 23 | 408 | 20.40 | 121.79 | 0/2 | 12.8% |
“So we believe Sanju is the best man for that job and we’ve got no doubt that he’ll figure out how to play that role in the future.”
” said ten Doeschate.
