Jayden Seales Destroys Pakistan To Break Dale Steyn’s Record In Historic ODI Win

West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales has made history, breaking Dale Steyn’s long-standing record with a jaw-dropping performance in the third ODI against Pakistan on Tuesday, August 12, at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad.

Jayden Seales Shatters Dale Steyn’s Record

Jayden Seales delivered his career-best bowling in 50-over cricket, tearing through Pakistan’s batting lineup and paving the way for a massive 202-run win. This victory also sealed a historic series triumph for the Windies, their first over Pakistan in more than 33 years.

His figures? An unbelievable 6 wickets for just 18 runs in 7.2 overs. That is the best bowling performance ever recorded against Pakistan in an ODI, surpassing the 6/39 taken by South African legend Dale Steyn back in 2013 in Gqeberha.

Jayden Seales came out firing with the new ball, striking early to dismiss the dangerous Saim Ayub for a three-ball duck. In the very next over, he sent Abdullah Shafique packing and knocked over skipper Mohammad Rizwan’s stumps, dealing a huge blow to Pakistan’s hopes.

Babar Azam Falls as West Indies Tighten Grip

Even Babar Azam, struggling for form, could not find a way past Seales, falling LBW for just 9 off 23 balls. From there, Jayden Seales made short work of the tail, cleaning up the lower order to seal the win. Gudakesh Motie (2/37) and Roston Chase (1/16) also chipped in with key wickets.

Thanks to these performances, the West Indies were able to avenge their 1-2 T20I series loss to Pakistan with a commanding ODI series victory. Earlier in the day, captain Shai Hope had led by example, scoring an unbeaten 120 off 94 balls, his 18th ODI century, hitting 10 fours and 5 sixes to help the hosts post a formidable 294/6.

When it came time to defend the total, Seales struck in his first over, removing Ayub for a duck on the third ball. He then dismissed Abdullah Shafique (0), Mohammad Rizwan (0), Babar Azam (9), Naseem Shah (6), and Hasan Ali (0) in quick succession.

This performance not only broke Steyn’s record but also made Jayden Seales the first West Indies bowler to take a six-wicket haul against Pakistan in an ODI. The 23-year-old finished the series with 10 wickets and was named Player of the Series.

The 202-run defeat was Pakistan’s biggest loss in ODIs against the West Indies and their fourth-biggest loss by runs overall. It was also the West Indies’ first home series win over Pakistan since 1988, and their first ODI series victory against them, home or away, since 1991.

For context, Pakistan’s heaviest ODI defeat came back in 2009, when they lost to Sri Lanka by 234 runs in Lahore.

Earlier, Shai Hope’s unbeaten ton powered the West Indies to their big total, with more than 100 runs coming in the final eight overs. This late onslaught left Pakistan stunned.

After the match, Mohammad Rizwan admitted his side could not bounce back from the late shift in momentum.

“We understood this was the third game given a Test across four innings was played on this deck. The momentum in the last 10 overs took it away as we were on top for the first 40 overs. We thought 220 was chaseable here. The credit goes to them. Credit to Hope,” said Rizwan.

“The execution was good, but the edges went in their favour. Hope batted well and played some good shots. We had Ayub and Salman bowling. We thought Abrar would come and bowl. But Hope batted well, and hence he didn’t complete his overs. Jayden Seales was bowling well. He troubled us through the series. We needed partnerships and needed to spend some time,” he added.
