England cricket team were up against South Africa in the first ODI at Riverside Ground on Tuesday, 20th July. England skipper Jos Buttler thanked Ben Stokes who was playing his last game in ODI cricket that day. Jos Buttler praised the current England Test cricket team skipper (Ben Stokes) for what he has done for England and for winning their first World Cup for them.
Ben Stokes has been officially retired from the ODIs after he announced that the first ODI against South Africa will be his last. He played in the game and showed some amazing geatures in the game. Stokes gave away his signed cap to a young English fan. Despite England lost this game against South Africa, the players were emotional regarding Ben Stokes retirement more than this defeat.
“Ben’s one of the most recognisable players in world cricket, someone everyone wants to see play in every format. I’m sure there’s more to it than the schedules etc but I think in international cricket you always want your best players playing if possible,” said Jos Buttler after the game telecasted by Sony Sports Network.
South Africa won this match by 62 runs as they gave a huge target of 334 runs to England. Batting first Van der Dussen scored an emphatic century and also was named ‘player of the match’ in this first ODI. Ben Stokes could only score 5 runs in 11 balls in his very last ODI game but the England fans gave a sweet farewell to him by standing up from their seats and applauding for the English all-rounder.
