Kane Williamson Replace Taijul Islam In Durban’s Super Giants For SA20 2025-26

3 Min Read

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is expected to return to Durban’s Super Giants for the SA20 2025-26 season as a replacement for Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam, who will not be able to attend. The move has been part of the DSG’s effort to strengthen its batting lineup ahead of the fourth edition of South Africa’s premier T20 league.

Kane Williamson Rejoins Durban’s Super Giants for SA20 2025-26

According to reports on ESPNcricinfo, Kane Williamson will take over Taijul Islam’s place in the Durban Super Giants squad. The Bangladesh left-arm spinner had been acquired for R500,000 (approx. US$28,858) at the September mega auction but has subsequently become unavailable for the coming season of the league.

Williamson had earlier represented Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 2025 season, where he emerged as the top run-getter for the side despite the team finishing at the bottom of the table. The experienced Kiwi batter scored 233 runs in eight matches at an average of 46.60 and strike rate of 118.87 before being released earlier this year.

Williamson’s Growing Franchise Cricket Presence

Williamson’s return to the SA20 2025-26 season underlines a growing engagement with global franchise leagues. In November, he was named Strategic Advisor for LSG in IPL 2025. Earlier this year, after his first season in SA20, Williamson made his maiden appearance in The Hundred and returned to the Vitality Blast after seven years.

The 35-year-old recently signed a casual playing agreement with NZC, allowing him to move easily into franchise opportunities overseas. Only last week, Williamson announced his retirement from T20 internationals, three months out from the 2026 T20 World Cup. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career.

Durban’s Super Giants Aim for Redemption in SA20 2025-26

With Williamson back in their fold, Durban’s Super Giants are looking to put the mishaps of the 2025 season behind them. He will be an exciting addition in a lineup that retained Noor Ahmad and pre-signed Sunil Narine and Jos Buttler, as the franchise looks for its fortunes to change.

The 2025-26 season of the SA20 gets underway on December 26, with Durban’s Super Giants beginning their campaign against MI Cape Town on December 28 at Kingsmead, Durban.
