Karman Kaur Thandi faced a disappointing comeback to Grand Slam tennis after suffering an early exit in the French Open qualifiers on Tuesday, May 19. The 27-year-old was beaten by France’s Harmony Tan, who cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in only 48 minutes in the opening qualifying round.
Competing on the clay court, Thandi was unable to settle into the contest as Tan dominated from the start. The French player, widely known for her shock win over Serena Williams at Wimbledon 2022, will now take on the winner of the match between Darja Vidmanova and Gao Xinyu in the next qualifying round.
Karman Kaur Thandi failed to capitalize on opportunities
Tan remained in complete control throughout the match, while Thandi struggled to make an impact on both serve and return. The Frenchwoman converted five of her eight break-point chances, whereas Thandi failed to capitalize on her lone opportunity. Tan’s superior first-serve accuracy also played a key role, helping her dominate her service games with ease.
In the early stages of the match, Karman Kaur Thandi was repeatedly forced deep behind the baseline and conceded several easy points through unforced errors. Although she briefly fought back with a handful of clean winners and competitive rallies, she struggled to sustain that intensity against constant pressure from Harmony Tan. Even in games where Thandi pushed the score to deuce or advantage on her serve, Tan stayed composed during extended rallies and capitalised on the Indian’s mistakes.
Karman Kaur Thandi weakness
Thandi’s backhand emerged as a major weakness during the contest, often breaking down under pressure and leading to a steady stream of errors. Her inconsistent first-serve percentage also made it difficult for her to hold serve comfortably or build any scoreboard pressure. Tan, meanwhile, maintained a disciplined approach throughout, taking full advantage of short deliveries and weak returns to dictate rallies and control the tempo of the match.
