Keshav Maharaj Takes Charge As Pretoria Capitals Captain For SA20 Season 4

In their statement, the franchise praised Keshav Maharaj for his experience and leadership qualities:

One of South Africa’s most experienced and respected leaders, Maharaj brings a wealth of international pedigree across formats, along with a proven track record of guiding teams with composure, clarity, and intent.

Having captained South Africa in white-ball cricket and served as a senior figure within the national setup for several years, Maharaj’s leadership experience, tactical understanding, and consistency make him an invaluable addition in this role. His presence strengthens the balance and direction of the Pretoria Capitals squad as the team heads into the new season,” the franchise said in a release.

A Fresh Coaching Setup for the Capitals

The Capitals will also be entering the season with a new coaching team. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will take over as head coach, supported by former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock. Their combined expertise brings a strong sense of direction to the squad.

Big Moves at the Auction

Pretoria Capitals were among the most active teams during the September auction. With a large purse of 32.5 million rand and 16 spots available, they made several major signings. Their biggest splash was securing Dewald Brevis for a record 16.5 million rand. They also picked up Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams, Craig Overton, Saqib Mahmood, and Codi Yusuf.

Another exciting addition is Andre Russell. After stepping away from the IPL as a player and taking on a power coach role for Kolkata Knight Riders, he joined the Capitals as a wild-card signing. Will Jacks and Sherfane Rutherford were also retained ahead of the auction.

Looking to Bounce Back After Mixed Results

The Capitals have had a mixed run in the league so far. They impressed in the inaugural season by topping the group stage but fell short in the final against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The following two seasons were tougher, with the team finishing fifth both times and missing out on the playoffs.

Season Four Begins December 26

The new SA20 season kicks off on December 26 with MI Cape Town facing Durban’s Super Giants. Pretoria Capitals begin their campaign on December 27 against Joburg Super Kings. The final is set for January 25, 2026.
