While the entire state of Uttar Pradesh and all of India wait for the Khelo India University Games 2022 Uttar Pradesh (KIUG22UP) formal opening ceremony on May 25, 2023, Kabaddi began the first competitive day of the games at the SVSP Sports Complex in Gautam Buddha Nagar amid considerable hype.
Over 4000 athletes representing over 200 universities and 21 sports will compete in the third iteration of the KIUG22UP. A brief cultural programme featuring local schoolchildren’s performances preceded the start of the Kabaddi competition at the SVSP Sports Complex. The evening’s chief guest, Shri Brijesh Singh, Minister of State for the Government of Uttar Pradesh’s Public Works Department and Minister Incharge, Gautam Buddha Nagar District, attended.
The competitive Kabaddi rounds got underway today at the SVSP Sports Complex with a total of four games. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya University (ABVVU), Bilaspur’s first league game of the women’s category at Greater Noida’s Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Indoor Sports Complex ended in a 28-41 loss to Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University, Jind.
In the early going of the preliminary round match, Sanju Devi played tirelessly for ABVVU, but their failure to execute the overall match plan prevented them from snatching a victory. However, ABVVU’s opponents from Jind altered their plan of attack to stop Sanju Devi, and they were successful because both teams were tied with three minutes remaining. The Jind squad changed tactics at this critical moment to tighten their control of the game and sped to a 41-28 victory.
HP University, Shimla defeated HCY University, Durg 51-29 in the second women’s match. In the first half of the game, Shimla University quickly built a 29-11 advantage by pressing hard from the outset. In the second half, Shimla’s team scored another 22 points, while Durg’s team made a valiant effort to reduce the deficit but was unable to make up any lost ground.
Due to injuries to two of its players in the middle of the opening round encounter between Adamas University Kolkata and Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, the men’s team struggled mightily. Kolkata lost 29–35. In the evening’s final game, Kota University easily defeated SRM University, Chennai, 28–23.
