KKR scored 29 runs off the last over to win, here are times when teams scored more than 20 runs to win

5 Min Read

Almost no one gave a chance to Kolkata Knight Riders yesterday when they needed 29 runs off the last over against the defending champions, Gujarat Titans. It was almost impossible and no one thought that after 1 run was scored on the first ball KKR would win the game. Rinku Singh managed to hit 5 sixes in the successive five balls. Here are some instances when the batting team scored more than 20 runs in the last over of the IPL match.

KKR vs GT (2023)

In the match where 48 runs were required in the last three overs, it was getting out of hand for KKR when 29 runs were needed off the last over. Rinku Singh was batting with Umesh Yadav who was on strike for the first ball. Yadav took a single on the first giving Rinku the strike for the final 5 balls. Yash Dayal bowled three full tosses and was dispatched for sixes. 10 were required off the last two balls and Dayal bowled a slower short-pitched ball which was heaved over long-on by Rinku. With four needed off the last ball, the tables had turned as everyone was backing Rinku to hit a boundary or six on the last ball. A similar delivery to the penultimate ball was bowled by Dayal who got the same treatment from Rinku. It was another six over long-on to snatch a win from GT. The KKR team managed to hit 31 runs off the last over out of which 30 came from Rinku’s bat.

DC vs KKR (2009)

It was KKR who was on the receiving end in 2009 as Rohit Sharma from Deccan Chargers as they scored 26 runs off the last over. Rohit was on the luckier side as he got a waist-high no ball for the first ball which he managed to pull for four runs. With a six on the third ball, it was a cakewalk for the chasing side as 8 runs were required off three balls. With a wide and a double on the next only 5 were required off the last two balls. Rohit hit a four to Mashrafe Mortaza and a six on the last ball to score 26 runs off the last over.

GT vs SRH (2022)

It was the recent finisher duo who over the last two years has provided some great finishes for their teams. It was Rahul Tewatia on one end and his partner Rashid Khan on the other. Marco Jansen had the ball in hand. The first ball was hit for a six by Tewatia who took a single on the next ball to give Rashid the strike. Rashid hit six over Jansen’s head. The next ball was a dot ball. But Rashid kept his nerves as he hit two sixes on the final balls to get a victory for his side. Tewatia and Rashid scored 25 runs off the last over.

RPSG vs PBKS (2016)

It was MS Dhoni and yet another last-over finish. With 23 runs required off the last over Axar Patel had the daunting task to defend the total against arguably the best finisher the game has ever seen. The first ball was a dot and then he bowled a wide. 22 were required off 5 balls when Dhoni hit a six. A dot ball and a four off the next ball meant Dhoni had to score two sixes on the final two balls. The legendary finisher did just that as he clobbered Axar for two sixes and scored 23 runs off the last over.
