In a major revelation that was made, it has been reported that the knee injury of Kylian Mbappe was initially misdiagnosed. Surprisingly, Real Madrid medical staff mistakenly carried out an MRI scan on the wrong leg in December.

The scan was performed on his healthy right knee, which showed no signs of damage. As a result, Mbappe continued playing and featured in three matches despite ongoing discomfort. According to sources with direct knowledge of the situation, he was still experiencing inflammation in his actual injured left knee during that time.

Once the mistake was identified, further tests were conducted on the correct knee. This revealed a partial tear in the posterior ligament. On December 31, Real Madrid issued a medical report consistent with that diagnosis, although they broadly referred to the issue as a knee sprain.

The error’s cause remains unclear, and neither the club nor the player’s representatives have publicly explained how it occurred.

When did Kylian Mbappe get actually injured?

The first signs of trouble date back to December 7, when Madrid suffered a 2-0 La Liga defeat to Celta Vigo. Kylian Mbappe reportedly picked up a knock during that game. He was then left on the bench for a Champions League clash with Manchester City on December 10, but soon returned to action, playing full matches in the team’s final three games of 2025. During that stretch, he equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year.

After the Christmas break, Kylian Mbappe was seen in training holding his left knee while speaking with medical staff. Shortly after, the club confirmed the injury and opted for a conservative recovery plan. He missed the Supercopa de España semi-final in Saudi Arabia but made a brief appearance in the final against Barcelona.

Despite the setback, Mbappe went on to play in eight of the next ten matches, scoring nine goals before being sidelined again. He later travelled to Paris for further assessment and treatment, accompanied by club medical staff.

He has now returned to action, with his condition being closely managed as Madrid look to keep him fully fit for the remainder of the season.
