Real Madrid’s superstar Kylian Mbappe won’t be suiting up against Pachuca in the Club World Cup, and no, it’s not transfer drama or training ground bust-ups this time. It’s gastroenteritis.
Mbappe was hospitalized on Thursday for tests and treatment after falling ill, but has since been discharged. According to a club source via AFP, he’s “improving bit by bit.” While that’s good news, he’s still not ready for Sunday’s clash in Charlotte.
Xabi Alonso, who’s still settling into the hot seat at Madrid, confirmed Mbappe’s absence during his pre-match press conference. “He’s doing better, he’s back from the hospital and is recovering. We’re optimistic about having him against Salzburg,” Alonso said.
That final group game against Salzburg? It’s happening Thursday in Philadelphia, a must-watch, especially if Kylian makes his return.
Gonzalo Garcia: The Next Man Up
In Mbappe’s absence, 21-year-old Gonzalo Garcia stepped up big time in the previous match. The B-team baller didn’t just fill in, he opened the scoring against Al Hilal and had three decent chances to double his tally.

Xabi clearly liked what he saw. “Gonzalo can perform like he did the other day. He scored a goal and had three chances. Having players with that sense of smell is very important,” he said.
With another chance on the big stage against Pachuca, Gonzalo’s making a name for himself while Mbappe sips electrolytes on the sidelines. Not exactly how we expected this Club World Cup to go, but hey, Madrid love chaos.
The Bigger Picture
Mbappe may be out sick, but the man still ended last season as La Liga’s top scorer with 31 goals and 43 in all competitions. Unfortunately, his fireworks didn’t earn Madrid any major silverware. And while this Club World Cup might not be the holy grail, it could be Xabi Alonso’s first piece of silver as a coach.

For now, it’s all about getting past Pachuca without their French talisman. If Gonzalo Garcia keeps delivering, we might just have a plot twist brewing in the Madrid frontline.
Stay tuned, this group stage drama is far from over.
