After a month-long of soccer, Columbus Crew emerged as the champions in the Leagues Cup 2024 final. Columbus Crew beat LAFC 3-1 to bag another title, continuing its impressive run in the American football arena.
Columbus Crew, the team from the Major League Soccer (MLS), has been the one with the most championships in the last five years. The Crew have won eight major trophies: the MLS Cup in 2008, 2020 and 2023; the Supporters’ Shield in 2004, 2008, and 2009; the 2002 U.S. Open Cup; and the Leagues Cup 2024.
The Columbus Crew largely dominated the first half, with LAFC spending most of the 45 minutes pinned back in their own box. Crew created several chances out of that dominance as LAFC made some heroic saves to keep the score level. Eventually, the Crew took the lead as the opening goal came from none other than superstar Cucho Hernandez, who found the net just minutes before halftime whistle. Mo Farsi gave the assist with a picture-perfect cross landing right on Hernandez’s head, who smashed a brilliant header past a helpless Hugo Lloris.
LAFC’s newest superstar Olivier Giroud provided an equalizer for his team in the 57th minute, making it 1-1 with his maiden goal for the club. Hernandez once again struck in the 90+2 minute for Crew to give his team a late 2-1 lead. He assisted Jacen Russell-Rowe moments later to hand Crew a 3-1 victory and another memorable final win over LAFC.
The Hero Of The Leagues Cup 2024 Final
Cucho Hernandez was undoubtedly the hero of the match with two goals and an assist. The superstar is arguably the most dominant force in MLS right now. Leading the charge for Crew once again, Hernandez proved to be a formidable force. He, thus, became the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
The 2024 edition was the fourth of the Leagues Cup. This season’s competition was technically the fourth edition of the Leagues Cup, however, only the second in its current format. Last season’s tournament was won by the soccer legend Lionel Messi and Inter Miami as the Argentine raged in his first matches with the club.
