Leylah Fernandez wins against second seed Aryna Sabalenka, to play for 1st-ever Grand Slam Title

The 1st Women’s Singles Semi-final of the 2021 US Open was played on Thursday night. The encounter was played between Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka.

The match which lasted for about 2 hours and 21 minutes, witnessed teenager Leylah Fernandez advancing into her first-ever Grand Slam Final. As the 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez defeated the No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

However, the Canadian, Leylah Fernandez ranked 73rd in the world had created huge upsets early on the tournament by defeating the two-time US Open Champion (2018 & 2020) Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the 3rd Round in three sets.

Not only that, but Fernandez went on to defeat top-ranked players back-to-back; Germany’s Angelique Kerber, the 2016 Champion in the Round of 16, and 5th seed Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the Quarter-finals.

As a result, with today’s win Leylah has beaten 3 of the Top 5 players en route to the 2021 US Open Final.

Meanwhile, this was the 23-year-old Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka second consecutive Grand Slam semi-final, having earlier reached the 2021 Wimbledon Semi-final in July.

Whereas for the Canadian teenager, she made her US Open debut last year i.e., in 2020 where she managed to made it to Round 2.
