Ligue 1 Is Considering A Four-Team Tournament To Decide The French League Winner

Psg have won the Ligue 1 title this year but the French Football Federation is seriously considering changing the pattern of the Ligue 1 from the next season at least for the top 4 finishers on the table.

A new Four-Team playoff system is being considered

In France, a new four-team playoff system is being considered in which the top 4 teams will play against each other to determine the winner of the French league.

Ligue 1 usually follows the same system in which the 1st team on the table at the end of the season wins the league and are crowned the Ligue 1 champions but now with this system in place all the 4 teams would have an equal chance to win the title and it would create more entertainment at the end of the season especially for the fans.

The French Football Federation (FFF) is evaluating bold reforms aimed at reshaping Ligue 1

According to L’Equipe, the French Football Federation (FFF) is evaluating bold reforms aimed at reshaping Ligue 1. Central to the proposed changes is a new play-off system that could determine the league champions through a knockout-style competition, a move that would significantly depart from the traditional points-based format used for decades.

The proposed tournament would mirror the current structure used in the top division of women’s football in France. Under that system, the team finishing first in the regular season faces off against the fourth-placed side, while second and third meet in the other semi-final. The victors of each match then clash in a final showdown to decide the champion.

The Ligue 1 competition has largely been bullied by PSG

The Ligue 1 competition has largely been bullied by PSG for the most parts of the last decade and this year was also the same with them winning the league without even losing a match until they had won the Ligue 1 last month.

This dominance of PSG means that other teams have not a lot of influence over French Football and it has also become quite predictable.

To address this, a reform task force led by Toulouse president Damien Comolli is weighing up a reimagined league format. The hope is that by introducing a play-off element, the race for the title will become less predictable and more compelling for fans and broadcasters alike.
