We are seeing something very unique in the French Ligue 1 this year. Generally, we see Paris Saint-Germain winning the league easily and other teams struggling to catch up. This year is different. There are 4 teams fighting for the top French honor and which probably has never happened before.

After 33 games played in the league, Lille OSC is sitting in 1st place with 70 points. PSG is though not much behind the league leaders with 69 points. Just behind them is Monaco with 68 points and Lyon at 67 points sits at 4th position.

Lille has been in top form this year. The team has only lost thrice in the whole season. The losses though came to bottom half table teams like Angers Nimes and Brest. They have drawn one match and won the other league match against the mighty PSG which in itself is a statement. What’s even better is that Monaco has beaten PSG in both the League matches.

Lille has been producing some excellent world-class players in the past few years. Nicolas Pepe when played for Lille had a record 2018–19 Ligue 1 season with 22 goals, second only to PSG’s Kylian Mbappé, with 11 assists, and was named in the UNFP Team of the Year. This year as well, players like Yazici, Jonathan Bamba, and Burak Yilmaz have been firing goals from the front. Renato Sanches is another player who has found his form and is playing with great panache.

With the top 4 teams playing with a difference of only 3 points it would be extremely interesting to see who lifts the French Ligue 1 trophy this year. Can any of the other 3 teams beat PSG to the title race? Time will tell.
