Lionel Messi has achieved yet another milestone by becoming the first player in the Major League Soccer (MLS) to score two or more goals in four consecutive matches.

The Argentine great scored both goals in Inter Miami’s 2-1 win against the New England Revolution.

Inter Miami have now won four matches in a row and remain unbeaten in their last five games.

Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute, on a defensive error by New England’s Tanner Beason. Eleven minutes later, Sergio Busquets found his longtime teammate with a pinpoint through ball from midfield. Messi, in classic fashion, controlled and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič with his left foot to double Miami’s lead.

Lionel Messi’s Dream Run

Messi’s streak began just before Inter Miami’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign, with braces in wins over CF Montréal and the Columbus Crew. Upon Miami’s return to MLS, Messi scored another brace against CF Montréal before netting twice again on Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. He has now scored eight goals across the past four matches, taking his season tally to 14 goals and 7 assists in just 15 appearances.

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano lavished praise on Lionel Messi. “I always say Leo is a special player,” Mascherano said after the match. “For me, the best player that has played this sport in history. So, it’s unbelievable because he continues doing things that maybe many, many years ago, we could not see at this moment. But at the end, he’s a special player. We are lucky to have him.”

The Argentine champion has scored in five straight games. Messi now has 14 goals and 7 assists in 15 matches this season. He is second in the MLS Golden Boot race, trailing only Nashville’s Sam Surridge (16 goals), who has played six more matches than the Argentine maestro. If Messi’s form holds, a push for both the Golden Boot and a second consecutive Supporters’ Shield appears well within reach.

Lionel Messi currently holds the record for most goals scored for Inter Miami, now standing at 58. He also holds league records for most assists in a single game (5) and most goal contributions in a single game (6).
