This September, Lisbon will host one of the most exciting football events of the year – the Legends Charity Game. Some of the greatest names in football history will come together to support communities impacted by war and conflict around the world.
Football Legends Gather in Lisbon for a Greater Cause
The match will take place on Monday, September 15, just before the SBC Summit Lisbon. It will feature a showdown between Portugal Legends and World Legends. Around 60,000 fans are expected to fill the stadium, with millions more watching online and on television.
Organized with the backing of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the goal is to raise over €1 million for a range of charities that provide aid to families facing difficult conditions.
Representing Portugal, football icon and Ballon d’Or winner Luis Figo will lead the team. Sharing his enthusiasm for the match, he said: “It’s always a pleasure to come back to my country and play football, especially when wearing the national team colours! Hope to see a full stadium in my hometown Lisbon for this amazing Legends Charity Game and raise funds for important charity causes.”
He will be joined by fellow Euro 2016 winners Ricardo Quaresma, Eliseu and Ricardo Carvalho. Additional Portuguese legends confirmed for the lineup include Fábio Coentrão, Hugo Almeida, Deco, José Bosingwa, Vitor Baia, and Maniche. The squad will also feature Beto, Jorge Andrade, Dani, Tiago Mendes, Hélder Postiga, Nuno Gomes and Simão. Former midfielder and Champions League winner Costinha will manage the team.
The World Legends team brings together some of the most celebrated players from across the globe. Big names include Peter Schmeichel, Cafu, Javier Zanetti, Ronaldinho, Diego Lugano, Leonardo Bonucci, Gheorghe Hagi, Edwin van der Sar, Henrik Larsson, Youri Djorkaeff, Christian Karambeu, Gaizka Mendieta, Marek Hamsik, Giorgos Karagounis, Krassimir Balakov, Shota Arveladze and Javier Saviola.
Raising Over €1 Million for Global and Local Charities
The venue will be either Estádio da Luz, home of Benfica, or José Alvalade Stadium, where Sporting Lisbon plays. The final decision will be announced in August when the Champions League schedule is released.
Proceeds from the match will benefit charities both in Portugal and abroad. One of the key beneficiaries is the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, which continues to offer vital support during the ongoing war in Ukraine. Their work includes evacuations, medical assistance, shelter, and raising awareness about the dangers of unexploded ordnance.
Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross, said: “The war in Ukraine continues, and unfortunately, millions of people still need support every day. We have no right to stop. Initiatives like the Legends Charity Game are not just about the funds raised. They are about compassion, and the understanding that the world stands by us. They are about solidarity that transforms into real help for those going through the toughest times. We are grateful to everyone who takes part.”
Lisbon-based charity Cáritas Portuguesa is also a beneficiary. The organization helps marginalized communities struggling with poverty and inadequate access to emergency aid.
Rasmus Sojmark, Founder and CEO of SBC, commented: “We are taking our charitable endeavours up a notch this year with the spectacular football match in order to raise a lot of money for some very worthy causes. By tying the match in with the SBC Summit in Lisbon the same week, we have found a way for the communities around football and business to help other communities that are facing unimaginable hardships.”
Tickets are now on sale at www.legendscharitygame.com and are being managed by See Tickets. Sponsorship and hospitality packages are also available. Confirmed sponsors include iGP, Soft2Bet, Sportingtech, Vegas Legends, Spribe, SmartSoft and Alea.
The match is being organized by the Sport Global Charitable Foundation, a restricted fund under Prism the Gift Fund, a UK-registered charity. All proceeds will be donated to its selected charities, including the Ukrainian Red Cross Society and Caritas Portugal.
