In an action-packed match at Old Trafford on Monday (August 11), Manchester Originals (MO) earned their first win of the season, beating London Spirit (LS) by 10 runs. David Warner’s fantastic 71 off 51 balls went in vain as LS fell short of the target.
Deciding to bat first in the LS vs MO encounter, Phil Salt provided the Originals with a flying start, hitting three boundaries in the initial set. Ben McKinney contributed to the onslaught, making a quick 29 off merely 12 deliveries from Liam Dawson and Richard Gleeson.
This initial hostility proved vital since runs became more difficult to come by in the second half. After Salt’s fall around the midway point, LS drew back the initiative. Jos Buttler (46) and Heinrich Klaasen (24) found it difficult to push the pace, scoring only 49 runs off 38 balls for the third wicket.
The originals were, despite early fireworks, limited to 163/6 in 100 balls, with Jamie Overton’s 2/26 being the best from LS’s bowling performance.
London Spirit’s response to the LS vs MO match got underway solidly, Warner gaining control while Kane Williamson toiled for 19 from 20 balls. Warner’s middle-over charge punished Josh Tongue, Lewis Gregory, and Noor Ahmad, keeping LS competitive.
Boundaries ran dry post-Williamson’s fall. Jamie Smith and Warner both found it tough to reach the fence, and with 55 required from 21 balls, pressure grew.
Ashton Turner flicked a glimmer of hope for LS with a six and a couple of boundaries off his first ball. But the momentum did not last long. Warner and Turner departed in rapid succession. Jamie Overton’s late-order hitting reduced the equation to 17 off the last set, but Scott Currie kept his nerve, limiting himself to six runs to win the match for MO.
