Luka Modrić Scores His 1st AC Milan Goal
Luka Modrić made history for AC Milan by scoring his first goal for the club just days after celebrating his 40th birthday. His strike was enough to seal a dramatic victory over Bologna in a Serie A clash full of tension, drama and controversy.
The Rossoneri picked up another three points, but the match also saw head coach Max Allegri sent off after a late penalty for Bologna was overturned following a VAR review, sparking furious protests.
Milan Missing Stars but Rabiot Debuts
Milan entered the match after a win over Lecce but were still without key players Rafael Leão and Ardon Jashari. Adrien Rabiot made his debut in midfield, while Christian Pulisic was rested after his international duty with the United States.
Rabiot’s appearance had added interest as he faced Jonathan Rowe on the Bologna bench. The two had clashed during Rabiot’s time at Marseille, which led to his dismissal from the French side. Bologna were also without important players including Ciro Immobile, Tommaso Pobega, Emil Holm, Nicolò Casale and Ibrahim Sulemana. This encounter was also a repeat of last season’s Coppa Italia final, won by Bologna.
Bologna Start Strong but Milan Hit the Post
The opening minutes were lively. Rabiot was immediately involved when Youssouf Fofana set him up, but Nadir Zortea denied the chance. Gimenez forced a save with a powerful shot, while Cambiaghi had a goal ruled out for offside. Estupiñán then struck the post as Bologna looked dangerous.
Despite a bright beginning, Milan allowed Bologna to dominate much of the first half. However, just before halftime, Modrić crossed into the box for Loftus-Cheek, who flicked the ball on for Gimenez. The Mexican forward’s effort hit the post, denying Milan the breakthrough.
Injury Blow to Maignan as Terracciano Debuts
The second half began with Koni De Winter making his debut. But Milan suffered a major setback when goalkeeper Mike Maignan went off injured with a calf problem. Youngster Pietro Terracciano came on for his first-ever Serie A appearance, adding pressure to the Rossoneri.
Even with the change in goal, Milan continued to push forward and eventually found their hero in Modrić.
Modrić Scores Historic Goal at 40

The decisive moment arrived when Modrić started a move from midfield. The ball moved through Loftus-Cheek and Saelemaekers before returning to the Croatian. With a calm and elegant right-footed shot inside the penalty area, Modrić scored his first goal for AC Milan.
At 40 years old, he showed that his quality and class remain at the highest level, sending the San Siro into celebration and giving Milan the lead.
Bologna Fight Back but Controversy Ends Hopes
Bologna refused to give up. Ricci hit the post and the Rossoblu created several chances to equalise. At the other end, Pulisic appealed for a penalty while Gimenez missed clear opportunities.
Late in the match, Bologna thought they had won a penalty for a foul on Nkunku. But after checking VAR, the referee cancelled the decision. This decision infuriated Allegri, who exploded in anger at the officials. The Milan coach was shown a red card and stormed off the pitch.
Milan Take Three Points, Bologna Left Frustrated
In the end, Modrić’s strike proved decisive. AC Milan celebrated three vital points, while Bologna left disappointed after creating chances, hitting the woodwork and feeling hard done by refereeing decisions.
The result means Milan build momentum after their loss to Cremonese in the opener, while Bologna will look to recover from a night of frustration.
