Maheesh Theekshana: The Spin Wizard IPL 2025 Needs

Maheesh Theekshana: Spinners have become vital assets in the fast-paced Indian Premier League (IPL), where batters dominate the spotlight. Quality spin bowlers can change the game by taking key wickets and controlling the run rate, which makes them essential to any team. In a format designed for big scores, there are a few spinners who consistently keep batters on guard, and Maheesh Theekshana from Sri Lanka is one of them.

Theekshana, a talented off-spinner, has only played in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he claimed 25 wickets in 27 matches. Although CSK released him before the 2025 IPL auction, there’s still a chance they might use the Right to Match (RTM) card to get him back. Apart from CSK, other teams will likely keep a close watch on this skilled spinner. Here are three franchises that should consider bringing Theekshana on board for the upcoming season.

1. SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), last season’s runners-up, are currently short on spin-bowling options after releasing players like Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmad, Mayank Markande, and Wanindu Hasaranga. The team needs a strong lead spinner to bolster their attack, and Theekshana could be a great fit. With experience in multiple leagues—such as the Lanka Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, and SA20—Theekshana brings a wealth of T20 expertise.

The coaching staff, which includes former spinner Daniel Vettori, could use Theekshana’s skills effectively to build a more competitive spin attack for SRH.

2. Rajasthan Royals (RR)

The Rajasthan Royals retained a few key players, including Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal, but made some surprising releases, like the experienced Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. Losing Chahal, in particular, left a gap in the spin department that the Royals will likely look to fill in the auction.

Given that Theekshana has previously played for the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, there’s already a connection with the Royals’ setup. He could be an excellent option to anchor their spin attack and could help RR build a balanced bowling lineup.

3. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

With only a few retained players and a sizable budget for the IPL 2025 auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will likely focus on strengthening their bowling unit. Known for high scores at their home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB needs bowlers who can contain runs and handle pressure in tough conditions.

Theekshana’s skill set is ideal for such scenarios, especially during the powerplay and middle overs. With no lead spinner currently in their squad, RCB could benefit significantly from adding a consistent wicket-taker like Theekshana to their lineup.
