Martina Ubertová was born Navratilova on October 18, 1956 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. When she was three years old, her parents got a divorce, and her mother, who was an accomplished gymnast, tennis player, and ski instructor, decided to transfer the family to evnice. Navratilova began playing tennis on a regular basis at the age of seven and was striking tennis balls off concrete walls as early as age four. Navratilova won the national tennis title for Czechoslovakia in 1972 when she was just 15 years old. She made her professional debut on the United States Lawn Tennis Association tour in 1973 when she was 16 years old, but she did not turn real pro until 1975.

At the age of 17, Navratilova triumphed in her first professional singles match in Orlando, Florida, in 1974. When she first arrived in the country, Navratilova resided with tennis aficionado Morton Wormser and his wife, former actress Frances Dewey Wormser. When Navratilova secured the world No. 1 position for the very first time on the WTA computer at Wimbledon in 1978, she also won her first major singles championship there. Evert regained the No. 1 spot in January 1979.

Navratilova, who was born in Czechoslovakia, lost her citizenship when, at the age of 18, she applied for political asylum in the US and was given temporary residency. In 1981, she attained US citizenship. Navratilova obtained Czech citizenship on January 9, 2008, making her a dual citizen. She said that recovering her Czech nationality was not politically motivated and that she has neither renounced nor plans to renounce her U.S. citizenship.
