Mary Kom participating in the World Championships has become a lot more complicated as she skipped the National Championship. Boxing Federation of India has announced that the winner of the National Championships will make the World Championship squad.
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that the legendary boxer will skip the National Championships. The tournament, organized by Puma is being held at Hisar.
Mary Kom on skipping the National Championship
Speaking to Indian Express, Mary Kom revealed that she skipped on the tournament to help budding boxers. However, Mary Kom’s decision to skip the National Championships is not her first time. She said that she skips the tournaments to let the young boxers have a chance of winning medals and wants the young boxers to make a name for themselves.

“This is not the first time that I have skipped a National Championship event. Why I skip is I want to give an opportunity to upcoming boxers to win a medal in the National games and make a name for themselves on the national stage. If I keep on fighting, they might not get that opportunity to win a medal in the National Championships,”

Meanwhile, the six-time world champion also shed a light on the situation of her participation in the World Championships to be held in Istanbul.
She says, “I thought I will give the trial this time for a place in the World Championships. But I don’t know what BFI has decided. Everything is up in the air at the moment. If they will hold any other trial for the World Championship, I will be happy to give the trial,”.
Women’s championship will have the same prize money as men’s
The Women’s World Championship event will offer total prize money of USD 2.6 million. The amount is the same as marked for the men’s event. The men’s event starts on October 24 in Belgrade, Serbia.
