PALMEIRAS’ Club World Cup clash with Al Ahly was dramatically suspended due to lightning in the area turning a routine football night into a sudden scramble for safety.

The Brazilians were cruising with a 2-0 lead by the 62nd minute when English referee Anthony Taylor halted play at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, a venue set to host the 2026 World Cup final.

As thunder rumbled and lightning loomed, a big screen announcement urged fans to “leave the Seating Bowl area and take shelter inside the stadium.”
Even the on-site DAZN commentators were pulled off-air and told to return to the concourse.

Official stadium message displayed:

Your attention please.
For your safety, we are going to have everyone leave the Seating Bowl area and take shelter inside the stadium because of severe weather in the area.
Event Staff are available to guide and assist you.
Those on the field, please walk calmly to the nearest tunnel, to the West Hall, or to the service corridor.

Game So Far… Before The Skies Opened Up

49th Minute: Palmeiras took the lead via an own goal by Wessam Abou Ali.
Moments later: Flaco López doubled the lead with a tidy finish, putting the Brazilians in full control.

But then, Mother Nature had other plans.

With thunderclouds overhead and safety taking top priority, the match was officially suspended, leaving players, officials, and fans all waiting for the storm to pass, quite literally.

Repeated announcements over the stadium public address system told the public to leave their seats and take shelter inside the stadium concourse because of the threat of “severe weather” although fans were slow to move out.

The start of the Group F match in Orlando on Tuesday between South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan of South Korea was delayed by 65 minutes because of the threat of lightning.
