Kylian Mbappe hits a double as Real Madrid see off Oviedo to keep perfect La Liga start

Real Madrid’s new superstar Kylian Mbappe wasted no time in reminding everyone why the club pulled out all the stops for him this summer. The Frenchman scored twice as Los Blancos cruised to a 3-0 win away at Oviedo, making it back-to-back victories in La Liga.

Mbappe doing Mbappe things

After scoring the match-winner against Osasuna last week, Mbappe was once again the difference-maker. His first came just before half time, a trademark low finish from the edge of the box. And when Oviedo threatened a late comeback, Mbappe killed it off in the 81st minute with a calm side-footed finish. Three goals in two games, Madrid fans will be thinking they’ve hit the jackpot.

Vinicius Jr and Mastantuono add their spark

Vinicius Jr started on the bench but came on to add the icing on the cake, smashing home a third in stoppage time. The other big talking point was 18-year-old Franco Mastantuono, who Alonso trusted in the starting lineup. The teenager didn’t look out of place at all, constantly buzzing around the Oviedo defence and showing exactly why Madrid rate him so highly.

Trent left waiting

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold had to watch most of the match from the sidelines. After starting the previous game, Alonso opted for Dani Carvajal at right-back this time. The England international only got three minutes at the end when the score was already settled at 2-0.

Oviedo’s moment of hope

The home side almost gave their fans something to celebrate when Kwasi Sibo unleashed a rocket from distance that clipped the outside of the post. But within moments, Mbappe had made it 2-0, and that was the end of the contest.

Title race already shaping up

The win means Real Madrid join Barcelona and Villarreal on six points from their opening two games. It’s early days, but with Mbappe firing and Vinicius Jr waiting to explode, Xabi Alonso’s men already look like the side to beat.
