In IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians faced a big setback after losing by 8 wickets to the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. This heavy defeat disappointed many MI fans and made their playoff chances look very difficult. Now, everyone is asking if the Mumbai Indians can still qualify for the playoffs.

If we look at the points table, their path seems almost closed because they need many results to go their way. However, cricket is an unpredictable game, and surprising comebacks can still happen. MI will have to win their remaining matches and also depend on other teams losing to keep their playoff hopes alive this season.

MI Playoff Scenario Looks Tough After Poor Points Table

In IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians are in a very difficult position on the points table. They have played 9 matches but won only 2, which gives them just 4 points. Right now, they are placed 9th, which is near the bottom.

Their net run rate is also very poor at -0.803, making things even worse for their playoff chances. The Mumbai Indians now have only 5 league matches left to play. This means they cannot afford to lose even a single game from here. One more mistake could end their chances completely, so they must win all matches and improve their performance quickly.

MI Playoff Scenario: The Hard and Lucky Qualification Path

For the Mumbai Indians, the playoff chances in IPL 2026 now look very difficult, almost like walking on a thin line. To reach the top 4, they must do a few important things. First, they have to win all their remaining 5 matches against teams like Lucknow Super Giants, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and others.

If they win all, they can reach a maximum of 14 points. Second, they must improve their net run rate from -0.803 to a positive number by winning matches with big margins, like 80 to 100 runs or by chasing targets very quickly. Finally, they also need other teams like the Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, and Delhi Capitals to lose matches so no team crosses 14 points.

MI Playoff Scenario: Teams That Can End Mumbai’s Hopes

In IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians are not only struggling with their own performance but also facing strong competition from other teams. Punjab Kings with 13 points, Royal Challengers Bengaluru with 12 points, Sunrisers Hyderabad with 12 points, and Rajasthan Royals with 12 points are already in a strong position on the points table.

For Mumbai, the biggest threat comes from Rajasthan Royals with 12 points, Gujarat Titans with 10 points, and Chennai Super Kings with 8 points. If these teams win just 2 or 3 more matches, they will move ahead easily. This would officially end the Mumbai Indians’ chances of reaching the playoffs, making their situation even more difficult.
