MI vs KKR: In the IPL 2026 encounter between MI and KKR, a marathon of runs was put up by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with 220 runs for 4 wickets on the scoreboard, leaving Mumbai Indians (MI) with much work ahead in order to reach their target.
But an outstanding batting display by openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton changed the tone of the match as both contributed 81 and 78 runs. MI won the match by 6 wickets. This was MI’s biggest chase in IPL history and after 2012 they won their first IPL opening match.
KKR Innings – Strong Foundation and Explosive Finish
Upon being sent in to bat first, Kolkata Knight Riders put on a fantastic show with the bat. The innings was anchored by Ajinkya Rahane who played very well to make 67 runs from 40 balls. The man who stole the bread of the show was the youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi who played a fantastic knock of 51 runs from just 29 balls, providing some momentum during the middle overs.
The early onslaught by Finn Allen gave Kolkata Knight Riders a great start in the powerplay overs. Although Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult bowled some very tight overs, Kolkata Knight Riders continued to score runs at a good rate and finished with a total of over 200 runs.
KKR’s total was 220 runs for loss of 4 wickets after Twenty (20) overs completed. MI’s bowler Shardul Thakur produced an excellent performance, taking 3 wickets for 39 runs in 4 overs bowled. Rohit Sharma and Rickelton led the way as MI began their chase of KKR’s total with great aggressiveness by making their target of 220 runs appear quickly achievable by the outset of the innings.
Sharma put in a sparkling innings that produced a score of 78 runs off 38 balls and included numerous impressive strokes. He reached his half-century in just 23 balls, setting the tone early in the chase. Ryan Rickelton provided perfect support, scoring a rapid fifty off 24 balls. The duo stitched a massive 148-run opening partnership in just 11.5 overs, putting MI firmly in control.

MI vs KKR Turning Point – Rohit’s Missed Chance and Redemption
At the beginning of the game, Rohit Sharma dropped Angkrish Raghuvanshi when he was on 21 which turned out to be very costly as the young man went on to make a half century. But Rohit made up for it with a big bang by playing one of the other most effective innings through the rest of the game.
MI vs KKR Big Moment – Rohit Sharma Gets Caught
At 78 runs, Rohit’s tremendous innings came to an end by being caught at long-on due to an outstanding catch from the fielder (who had previously had a phenomenal run out earlier in this innings) after Rohit had already set MI up perfectly to comfortably run down the total.
Middle Overs Drama – Quick Wickets but MI in Control
KKR fought hard to recover in the mid-innings with Suryakumar Yadav making a quick 16 runs before he was bowled by an excellent ball from Kartik Tyagi. Ryan Rickelton was run out for 81 due to a mix-up at 2nd base.
Tilak Varma scored 20 runs, including a very important four late in the innings. Though both teams suffered some setbacks, MI was able to maintain a strong run rate for the entire innings allowing them to be in a good position to chase the score down.
Mumbai Indians Win The Game In The Final Few Overs
Mumbai Indians did well to maintain their composure during the last few overs of their innings when Tilak Varma and the lower order were able to execute the chase to perfection. Naman Dhir hit the winning boundary to give MI a big win.
Result: Mumbai Indians won by 6 wickets
Chase: 221 runs completed in 19.1 overs
KKR Innings – Rahane and Raghuvanshi Shine
The Kolkata Knight Riders began the match by setting an impressive score of 220 runs at the end of their 20 overs thanks to some excellent batting by captain Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 67 runs off 40 balls for KKR and also debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi (who scored 51 runs off 29 balls).
The two built a successful partnership for their team, enabling KKR to remain aggressive all throughout their innings; however, MI’s explosive batting line-up proved that this total was not enough.
Key Turning Point – Dropped Catch Costs MI – But a Happy Ending
There was an early opportunity for MI to drop Angkrish Raghuvanshi off Rohit Sharma’s bowling, which would have prevented him from scoring the 50 runs that he would go on to score in this match. Ultimately, Rohit made up for the dropped catch with a match-winning performance.
