Nicholas Pooran led from the front as his century in the finals saw MI New York beat Seattle Orcas to win the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2023 title in the inaugural season. Pooran was in great form as he smashed the season’s highest score when it mattered the most.
Seattle Orcas’ batting
Former MI player in the IPL, Quinton de Kock scored 87 runs in 52 balls. His knock included 9 fours and 4 sixes. Shubham Ranjane batting at number 5 scored 29 runs in 16 balls. Dwaine Pretorius played out a great cameo scoring 21 runs in just seven balls. The finish from Pretorius allowed Seattle Orcas to set a target of 184 for MI New York.
For MI New York, Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers picking up three wickets. Rashid took three wickets in his four overs while conceding just nine runs. Alongside, Rashid, Trent Boult also took three wickets. Namibian all-rounder, David Wiese had a poor performance with the ball in hand. Wiese conceded 65 runs in his four overs.
MI New York’s chase
The MI franchise had lost their opener, Steven Taylor on just the third ball of the chase. His fall of wicket meant that MINY’s skipper, Pooran walked in. Despite not receiving any significant support from the other end, the West Indian wicketkeeper single-handedly won the game for MI New York. Pooran scored 137 runs in just 55 balls and remained not out to seal the victory for his side in just 16 overs. His knock included 10 fours and 13 sixes and ended with a strike rate of 249.
For Seattle Orcas, it was a very ordinary performance from the bowling group. Pakistani spinner, Imad Wasim and South African pacer, Wayne Parnell took a wicket each. Interestingly, Imad and Parnell who were the only wicket takers from the Orcas’s bowling lineup just bowled two overs each. Cameron Gannon from the USA who has been impressive throughout the tournament conceded 36 runs in his four overs. Pretorius after impressing everyone with the bat in hand in the first innings, failed to repeat his heroics in the second innings as he conceded 47 runs in just three overs.
