The Honour of Kings
Surprise! The Honour of Kings, Tencent’s China-only MOBA, is back. The fact that this is the year’s highest earner is not shocking, but that doesn’t lessen how incredible the numbers are.
The game’s revenue fell somewhat in 2018 to about $1.04 billion after surpassing $1 billion in 2017. However, it has increased every year since, reaching $1.15 billion in 2019, $1.5 billion in 2020, and $1.76 billion in 2021. New record-breaking $2.2 billion in 2022, up $460 million from the previous year. Once more, Honor of Kings revenue increased by $460 million annually, or about the same as one Puzzle & Survival or Garena Free Fire game.
PUBG Mobile
The honour of Kings is still far superior to PUBG Mobile, which is second in popularity and is accessible to a much larger audience. The game’s $1.73 billion in projected earnings for 2022 cover both the international edition and the China-only “/Game for Peace” version.
The $1.27 billion generated by that China-exclusive edition in 2022 will make up only a portion of the $1.73 billion in overall worldwide income. The annual revenue in 2022 is $300 million less than it was in 2021 when it earned $2.02 billion.
Given that it made more money in 2020 ($1.79 billion) and 2021 than it did in 2019, 2022 was PUBG Mobile’s lowest year since 2019. Still, we’re going to claim that $1.73 billion is still a significant sum of money.
Candy Crush Saga
Candy Crush Saga continues to progress. King’s juggernaut is expanding and doing well in terms of instals, as we pointed out in yesterday’s analysis of the download charts: Every year; revenue increases on an overall trend. Most significantly, it increased from $884 million in 2021 to $1.03 billion in 2022, the first time it crossed the $1 billion threshold in a calendar year.
Roblox
Contrarily, from a high of $958 million in 2021 to a total of $862 million in 2022, Roblox‘s revenue has decreased by approximately $100 million annually. As was also mentioned in yesterday’s study, there is a nagging feeling that Roblox has not yet become the monstrous force that it may have become following its enormous pandemic-fueled increase in 2020 (2019 revenue: $364m; 2020 revenue: $838m).
Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, a game created and distributed by Electronic Arts (EA), was the highest-grossing mobile game in the first eight months of 2022. The most significant portion of EA’s app revenues during the measured period came from the role-playing game, which brought in close to 86.9 million dollars in revenue.
