Mohamed Salah Makes History: First Player to Win PFA Men’s Player of the Year Three Times

Mohamed Salah has officially carved his name into English football folklore. The Liverpool forward became the first player in history to win the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Men’s Player of the Year award three times, cementing his legendary status at Tuesday’s ceremony in Manchester.

And while Salah was taking centre stage for the men’s prize, Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey made her own mark by winning the women’s award, further proving how the game is thriving on both sides.

Salah’s Record-Breaking Season

At 33, Salah isn’t slowing down, if anything, he’s rewriting the record books. The Egyptian star racked up 29 goals and 18 assists in the 2024/25 season, driving Arne Slot’s Liverpool to yet another Premier League title.

This PFA award isn’t his only one from this campaign either. Salah also picked up the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, equalling the record for the most wins in that category too. Not bad for a player many thought had already peaked years ago.

Speaking after the ceremony, Salah reflected on just how special this achievement was:

“It’s something that makes me so proud. I look at myself now, a guy coming from Egypt and making it to the top level, making history today. It’s very special.”

From 2018 to 2025: A Journey of Dominance

Salah’s PFA timeline now reads: 2018, 2022, and 2025. What started as a dream debut season at Anfield has turned into an era-defining career.

This year, he beat out a strong shortlist featuring Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, United’s Bruno Fernandes, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, and Chelsea wonderkid Cole Palmer.

An Emotional Summer at Liverpool

Salah’s triumph came after a rollercoaster summer at Anfield. Liverpool saw heavy recruitment but also suffered heartbreak with the tragic passing of striker Diogo Jota.

Salah admitted the squad’s strength can’t simply be measured in signings:

“It’s tricky to say yes or no. We’ve brought in a lot of talent, but we also lost some great players and went through something very hard with what happened to one of our teammates.

Playing for Liverpool is not easy at all. The pressure is huge. Virgil, me, and all the senior guys try to help the new players settle.”

Contract Extension Ends Speculation

Back in April, Salah ended months of transfer rumours by signing a two-year contract extension, shutting down speculation about a big-money move to the Saudi Pro League.

That means Liverpool fans will be seeing more of their king in red and given how he’s playing, there’s every chance he’ll add even more silverware and records before that deal runs out.

The Final Word

From a young boy in Egypt to a three-time PFA Player of the Year, Mohamed Salah’s story is nothing short of iconic. He’s no longer just a Liverpool legend, he’s an all-time Premier League great.
