Mohammed Shami Creates History, Etches Name In Indian Cricket Glory

India’s sensational pacer Mohammed Shami has been making lots of news, off-lately, however, for all the right reasons. On Wednesday, Mohammed Shami added yet another feather to his already glorious cap as he reached an incredible milestone in T20 cricket by taking his 200th wicket in the format.

It has to be noted that Mohammed Shami is the 34th player to achieve this. Shami reached this milestone during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 match between Bengal and Baroda, on Wednesday, December 11, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Mohammed Shami reached the milestone during his spell in the match. Despite conceding a few extra runs, he ensured he added to his wicket tally. The pacer finished with figures of 2/43 in his four overs against Baroda.

Mohammed Shami has now taken 200 wickets in each of the three formats: T20 cricket, List A cricket, and first-class cricket—a rare achievement in cricket history. He joins fellow Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in this remarkable feat.

However, Shami’s performance wasn’t enough to save Bengal from defeat. They lost to Baroda by 41 runs, failing to defend a target of 173. With this loss, Bengal was knocked out of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, while Baroda moved on to the final.

Mohammed Shami’s performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 was important to prove his fitness ahead of his trip to Australia. Reports suggest that the NCA team has been monitoring his recovery, and he is expected to join the Indian team in Brisbane soon. However, he will only be available for the final two matches of the series.

Key Highlights of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Quarter-Final

Shami returned to competitive cricket during the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 after recovering from an injury sustained during the ICC World Cup 2023, which required surgery. He took his time to regain full fitness and is now preparing to travel to Australia for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

After Bengal’s loss in the quarter-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, skipper Sudip Gharami praised Baroda for their performance. He acknowledged that losing four wickets during the powerplay was the key reason for their defeat. He said:

“Credit has to be given to Baroda. Last year they were runners-up, they have batted, fielded well. When we lost 4 wickets in the powerplay, our batting collapsed and that’s where we lost the game. We learnt from this game that we should not give up and we can come back.”

Most T20 wickets by Indian pacers:
