BFOT training involves training that combines low-intensity exercise with blood flow occlusion to provide results similar to high-intensity training. It was first developed in Japan under the name KAATSU training, the method involves applying a pneumatic cuff over specific areas on the lower and upper limbs, the cuff is then inflated to a particularly defined pressure according to the individual’s need to obtain partial arterial and complete venous occlusion.
BFOT training is helpful in aiding a faster recovery for athletes of different age groups and different sports. It enhances an individual’s ability for muscle activation, faster rehabilitation and improved metabolic responses while increasing the athlete’s performance.
BFOT is seen as a key aspect of rehabilitation even during periods of immobilisation. BFOT should be performed under the surveillance of a qualified professional who can apply the cuffs properly and can determine the pressure required according to individual needs.
