The Chennai Super Kings are almost out of the playoffs race, but for Chennai Super Kings fans, Monday night at Chepauk was filled with mixed emotions. The team suffered a disappointing five-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite the result, the evening still gave supporters a moment they had been waiting for: a glimpse of MS Dhoni on the field.
Dhoni, who has stayed away from playing throughout the season because of injury concerns, finally walked out at the MA Chidambaram Stadium after the match. As CSK played their last home game of the season, the legendary former captain joined the squad for the team photograph before taking a lap around Chepauk to thank the fans for their constant support. The crowd erupted the moment Dhoni stepped onto the ground, turning an otherwise forgettable night into an emotional one.
MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina at Chepauk
The occasion became even more special when Dhoni reunited with his longtime friend and former teammate Suresh Raina, who was at the venue as part of the commentary panel. Over the years, the Dhoni-Raina partnership became one of the biggest reasons behind CSK’s success, with the duo playing a major role in bringing multiple IPL trophies to Chennai.
While fans continue to dream about seeing Dhoni return in the next IPL season, Raina shared an honest conversation he recently had with the CSK icon and the response has left many supporters emotional. Speaking on Star Sports, Raina revealed that he jokingly told Dhoni that missing IPL 2026 should not count and that he must return next year. However, Dhoni’s answer reflected the physical challenges he is currently facing.
Raina explains about MSD fitness
According to Raina, Dhoni admitted that his body is not as strong as it once was. Even then, Raina kept insisting that fans would not accept retirement so easily and urged him to come back for another season. Despite the uncertainty, Raina added that Dhoni still sounded positive, while also praising the way the current CSK squad is slowly coming together again.
Dhoni’s comments made it clear that fitness remains the biggest obstacle in deciding whether he can continue playing at the highest level. At 44, the legendary wicketkeeper knows the demands of the tournament are tougher than ever.
MS Dhoni might play next Season
After the match, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was also asked about Dhoni’s future with the franchise. Fleming chose not to give a direct answer and said the final decision rests with the team management.
He admitted that even without playing, Dhoni has continued to play a massive role inside the dressing room this season. From guiding young players to maintaining continuity within the squad, Fleming said Dhoni’s influence remains invaluable to the franchise.
The coach also pointed out that CSK have started building for the future by introducing young talents who could become long-term players for the team. However, he acknowledged that results matter and accepted that criticism over the season’s performances is fair. For now, the biggest question remains unanswered , whether fans have already seen Dhoni play his final IPL match, or if “Thala” still has one last comeback left in him.
