MS Dhoni is once again in the spotlight, as reports suggest he could return to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2026. At 44 years old, the legendary wicket-keeper might be retained as an uncapped player under the new rules. With N. Srinivasan back as CSK Chairman, the possibility of Dhoni’s comeback has grown even stronger.
After IPL 2025 ended, Dhoni himself said he would take “four or five months” to decide his future. His statement left fans guessing whether he will walk away or continue in yellow for one more season.
But here’s the big question: would it really be the right move for MS Dhoni to return in IPL 2026? Let’s break it down.
1) Dhoni Has Already Done His Job

In IPL 2025, Dhoni played a big role in keeping the team together during a tough campaign. CSK struggled badly after a poor mega auction and underperforming seniors. Yet, Dhoni’s presence helped the team avoid complete collapse.
However, with Ruturaj Gaikwad now more mature as a leader, CSK finally seems ready for the next chapter. The team has built a new foundation across departments, and continuing to depend on Dhoni could actually slow down this progress.
As for his batting, age and the impact player rule have reduced his role. While his keeping skills are still sharp, CSK might be better off with a wicket-keeper who can contribute higher up the order. Dhoni has given enough already now might be the time to step aside.
2) Time for CSK to Move On in Wicket-Keeping

The IPL 2026 mini-auction is a golden chance for CSK to plan a proper transition. Former spinner R. Ashwin even suggested that New Zealand’s Tim Seifert could be a good fit. Apart from him, there will be several strong options in the pool.
CSK also has Urvil Patel, a young and exciting keeper, waiting for opportunities. If CSK secures a wicket-keeper who can bat in the top or middle order, it will free up space for an extra all-rounder lower down. This balance could give the team the firepower they lacked in IPL 2025.
Keeping Dhoni in the XI might stop CSK from exploring these new and better combinations.
3) Dhoni’s Real Value is Now Off the Field

On-field, Dhoni doesn’t have the same impact he once had. But off the field, his influence is unmatched. He is the soul of CSK, the ultimate leader, and the biggest crowd-puller.
In the past few seasons, there was always a reason for Dhoni to continue. In 2023, it was about the fairytale ending with a fifth title. In 2024, it was about guiding Ruturaj Gaikwad. In 2025, it was about unfinished business.
But heading into 2026, there is no strong cricketing reason for him to play. His contribution as a mentor, brand ambassador, and guide to the youngsters might now be more valuable than his role as a player.
