The Initial Struggle of Mumbai Indians and Mumbai Indians Players

The Mumbai Indians were expected to be one of the strongest teams in the first season of the IPL, with players such as Sachin Tendulkar (their Icon Player), Sanath Jayasuriya, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga, Robin Uthappa, and Harbhajan Singh among their ranks. However, while the team had a lot of experience, they were slow.

While much was expected of Tendulkar, the veteran Indian batsman missed the majority of the season due to injury. To make matters worse, his deputy, spinner Harbhajan Singh, was barred from the tournament for slapping bowler Sreesanth during a match against Kings XI Punjab. The team finished in fifth place.

The 2009 season was similar in that MI and its players struggled with injuries and poor player selection by team management. They were only able to finish seventh in the league.

Setting the Foundation: Rise of Mumbai Indians Team

After learning from their previous mistakes, the Mumbai Indians decided to rebuild their team by acquiring talented young players. They paid $750,000 for Trinidad’s all-rounder Kieron Pollard in the auction window, along with ten other uncapped Indian players. Some of these players included Ambati Rayudu, Abhishek Nayar, and Saurabh Tiwary. Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar was the season’s star, scoring 618 runs to win the Orange Cap.

2011 provided another opportunity for rebuilding, as the addition of two new teams meant that each team had to lose all but four players to auctions. MI chose to keep Tendulkar, Pollard, Harbhajan, and Malinga for $4.5 million.

They purchased Indian batsman and future captain Rohit Sharma ($2 million) and inform pacer Munaf Patel ($700,000) during the IPL auction window. The Mumbai Indians finished third in the points table as a result of their successful shopping, with 18 points from 14 games.

In the Eliminators, they defeated Shahrukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders. However, they were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore by 43 runs in the qualifiers.

The Glory: Mumbai Indians Team

The 2013 IPL season was going to be special for the MI and Mumbai Indians squad, with veterans like Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar making way for youngsters. This season saw Rohit Sharma take over as captain of the team. Along with Sachin Tendulkar, the team was mentored by Anil Kumble and Jonty Rhodes.

After a tense start, the MI team went on to win their first IPL title. They followed that up with a Champions League victory.

The team was unable to perform with the same rigor in the 2014 season, possibly due to the abrupt change in venue (from Mumbai to UAE). Nonetheless, based on net run rate, they made it to the final four. However, they were defeated in the eliminator by Chennai Super Kings.

MI won their second IPL title in 2015, defeating archrival Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs. Despite starting the season with four losses, they fought back by winning nine of the next ten games in a row.

In 2017, a strong Mumbai Indians team finished first in the IPL table, winning 10 of 14 games. In one of the best IPL matches ever played, they defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by one run.

The team failed to make the playoffs in 2018, finishing in fifth place.

MI and Mumbai Indians players had incredible seasons in 2019 and 2020. In both seasons, they were crowned champions.
