National Football League: NFC Team – Arizona Cardinals

3 Min Read

The team was founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago in 1898, and on September 17, 1920, it became a charter member of the NFL. The Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals are the only other NFL charter member franchises remaining in existence since the league’s establishment, and the Arizona Cardinals are the oldest continually operating professional football team in the United States (the Green Bay Packers were an independent team and did not join the NFL until a year after its creation in 1921). From 1960 through 1987, the squad played in St. Louis after moving there.

To distinguish themselves from the Major League Baseball (MLB) St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis squad was often referred to as the “Football Cardinals,” the “Gridbirds,” or the “Big Red.” For the following 18 seasons, the team played its home games at Sun Devil Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University after relocating west to Tempe, Arizona, a suburb east of Phoenix, before the 1988 season.

The team moved to their present home field in suburban Glendale in 2006, although their executive offices and training facilities are still located in Tempe. The Cardinals had their yearly summer training camp at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff from 1988 to 2012 (apart from 2005, when they trained in Prescott).

In 2013, the Cardinals relocated their training camp to State Farm Stadium (formerly known as University of Phoenix Stadium). The Cardinals have won two NFL titles, both while playing for Chicago. The first, which took place in 1925, is controversial since supporters of the Pottsville Maroons feel that their team should have won.

In 1947, over 20 years before the inaugural Super Bowl, they won their second game, the first one to be decided in a championship game. In 1948, they went back to defend their title but fell 7-0 in a snowstorm in Philadelphia.
