Located in Atlanta, the Atlanta Falcons play professional American football. The Falcons have a 55-year record of 379-487-6 (369-473-6 during the regular season and 10-14 during the postseason), and they have won division titles in 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010, 2012, and 2016. Two Super Bowls have featured the Falcons. In Super Bowl XXXIII from the 1998 season, they fell to the Denver Broncos 34-19, and in Super Bowl LI, 18 years later, they lost to the New England Patriots 34-28 in overtime.
The Falcons’ current home field, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, made its debut in 2017. The team’s administrative offices and practice facilities are situated on a 50-acre (20 ha) parcel of land in Flowery Branch, in Hall County, northeast of Atlanta.
In each of their first three seasons after becoming an expansion franchise in 1966, the Falcons lost at least 11 of their 14 games. With a defence anchored by line-backer Tommy Nobis and defensive end Claude Humphrey, the club gradually improved in the late 1960s and early 1970s to finish 1973 with a 9-5 record, just missing out on a playoff spot.
In 1975, Atlanta chose quarterback Steve Bartkowski with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft after falling to the bottom of its division once more. Bartkowski would go on to set franchise records in almost all significant throwing categories. In 1978, Bartkowski steered the Falcons to their first appearance in the postseason.
In 1980, he partnered with running back William Andrews to create a potent attack that brought Atlanta to its first division title. However, the Falcons were eliminated in the first round of each of these postseasons (as well as in their third appearance in the playoffs during the 1982 season, which was cut short by a strike), and the team’s performance quickly declined. From 1984 to 1990, the Falcons finished with double-digit losses in six of their seven seasons.
With colourful players like wide receiver Andre Rison, cornerback Deion Sanders, and flamboyant head coach Jerry Glanville, the Falcons won 10 games in 1991 but were defeated once more in the playoffs.
With a balanced team that included line-backer Jessie Tuggle on defence, quarterback Chris Chandler on offense, and running back Jamal Anderson on the ground, the Falcons achieved a club-best 14-2 record in 1998. The Falcons won the NFC championship game against a 15-1 Minnesota Vikings squad to win their first trip to the Super Bowl, where they fell to the Denver Broncos. But the Falcons suffered a 5-11 record the season after their Super Bowl triumph.

The Falcons are a National Football Conference (NFC) South division participant in the National Football League (NFL). The NFL granted then-owner Rankin Smith a franchise in order to prevent him from leaving for the rival American Football League, and the Falcons became an expansion team in 1965. (AFL).
