The NBA All-Star Weekend is back in the Bay Area in San Francisco for the first time since 2000. The 74th edition will run through from 14 to 16 February, promising three nights of thrilling basketball action.
The 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend will begin with the usual highlighting events – Slam Dunk, 3-Point Contest and Skills Challenge before heading to the all-new All-Star tournament-style competition.
This year’s All-Star Weekend will notably feature a new format where instead of the traditional East vs. West showdown, players will compete in a four-team mini-tournament.
New NBA All-Star format
The traditional East vs West format has been shelved making way for a four-team mini-tournament event. For the first time in its 74 years, the NBA All-Star Game will feature a tournament format with four teams with its very own dedicated draft, honorary managers and players from the league’s future Rising Stars team.
The first three teams – Team Shaq, Team Chuck, Team Kenny – are made up of the All-Star starters and reserves and were drafted by Shaquille O’Neal, Barkley and Kenny Smith. The fourth team – to be led by WNBA legend Candace Parker – will be formed by the winner of Friday’s Rising Stars event.
The four teams will compete in two semi-final games, with the winners advancing to a final.
2025 NBA All-Star Game: Stars to watch out
LeBron James was the first player to be picked in the draft and named as a start to a record-extending 21st All-Star team. He will play alongside fellow Team USA stars including Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Jayson Tatum and James Harden as part of “Team Shaq” in the refreshed version of the tournament.
Team Chuck – drafted by Charles Barkley- features international superstars such as Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Pascal Siakam, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Paris 2024 runner-up Victor Wembanyama adding depth to the roster.
Meanwhile, newly minted Olympic gold medallist Anthony Edwards will star in Team Kenny, which consists of some budding crop, including Jalen Brunson and Cade Cunningham playing alongside him.
