Trae Young has not yet agreed to a contract extension with the Atlanta Hawks. Reports suggest he isn’t thrilled about that, but there’s still time. An extension could happen anytime during the season. Even if it doesn’t, he still has a player option for the 2026-27 season.
However, it might not make sense for him to take that option. If he enters free agency, Trae could be one of the most in-demand players on the market. That opens the door for several interesting possibilities. Here are five teams that could be the best fit for him if he decides to move.
5. Phoenix Suns
The Suns were at their best when they had a true point guard leading the team. Without one, they’ve struggled to make deep playoff runs. Adding Trae Young would give them a dangerous backcourt with Devin Booker. The trade would not be simple it might require a sign-and-trade deal but the reward could be huge. The Suns could become one of the most exciting offensive teams in the league.
4. LA Clippers
James Harden is currently their floor general, but he can also play off the ball. If the Clippers want more firepower, pairing Trae with Kawhi Leonard could be the answer. They might have to make tough roster moves to make it work, but the Clippers are no strangers to big swings when it comes to building a contender.
3. Sacramento Kings
The Kings once had De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton together, but they are back in the hunt for a strong point guard. With plenty of cap space, Sacramento could make a competitive offer for Trae. While they may not be the top choice for a championship run right away, the Kings are a young, exciting team where Trae could be the star centerpiece.
2. Los Angeles Lakers
Trae Young’s name has often been linked to the Lakers in the past. While he’s no longer with Klutch Sports, the possibility is still there especially with questions surrounding LeBron James’ future. If LeBron retires, leaves, or takes a big pay cut, the Lakers could make room for Trae. A partnership with Anthony Davis could keep the Lakers relevant in the title race.
1. Miami Heat
The Heat have been chasing a star point guard for years. Pat Riley has missed out before, but this could be his best chance yet. Miami has the resources to make an attractive offer, and Trae would immediately take control of the offense. Playing under Erik Spoelstra and in a city like Miami could be a dream scenario. The Heat might not be favorites right now, but they have a history of surprising the league.
