NBA free-throw shooting percentages have been consistent at around 75% since 1958, according to one of our early blogs. Considering that these are experts who are paid a lot to win points, this seems low. No matter the cause—mental block, lack of self-assurance, or shooting techniques—it has been 55 years since free-throw percentages significantly increased.
Individual Season Records – Free Throws
- Jerry West, 1965–1966, made 840 of them, which is the most.
- José Calderón recorded the highest free-throw percentage (98.05%) in 2008-09.
- Wilt Chamberlain attempted 1,363 free throws in 1961–1962.
Jerome Alan West, an American executive basketball player and former player, was born on May 28, 1938. He performed professionally with the National Basketball Association’s Los Angeles Lakers. West became a member of the Golden State Warriors’ executive board on May 19, 2011, and began working directly for the team’s new owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber. In addition, this position included an undisclosed minority ownership investment in the group. West won his seventh championship while working as a team executive in 2015, the year the Warriors won their first title in 40 years. In the 2016–17 campaign, he received his eighth. On June 14, 2017, West declared that he would join the executive board of the Los Angeles Clippers.
José Manuel Calderón Borrallo, a former player and current basketball executive from Spain, was born on September 28, 1981. He currently serves as a special advisor for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He earned a FIBA World Cup championship with the Spanish national team in 2006, two Olympic silver medals in 2008 and 2012, as well as a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Games. In addition, he received a bronze medal in 2013, two silver medals in 2003 and 2007, and a EuroBasket championship in 2011. In 2007, Calderón was chosen for the All-EuroBasket Team.
Wilton American basketball player Norman Chamberlain specialized at the center position. Chamberlain has been rated as the greatest player of all time by a number of athletes and newspapers. In the areas of scoring, rebounding, and durability, he holds multiple NBA regular season records. During his career, blocks were not taken into account. He was elected to the NBA’s 35th, 50th, and 75th anniversary teams as well as the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978.
All of the guys mentioned above shoot significantly worse than the typical NBA player does or did. There are still many players who simply can’t seem to grasp this free shot, although these figures have unquestionably decreased the average NBA free-throw percentage. It doesn’t appear like any new NBA recruits will help to raise this proportion either, with the NCAA only averaging about 69 percent. One day, according to Dallas Mavericks free-throw coach Gary Boren, every NBA team would have a Noah System in their gym. When that time comes, perhaps we’ll start to see a decline in these horrifying statistics.
