NEP vs ITA: Italy Registers Historic Win Over Nepal

4 Min Read

Italy got over the line in a handsome fashion against Nepal in their second match of the Men’s T20 World Cup, taking place in India and Sri Lanka.

NEP vs ITA: The Start

Opting to bowl first, Italy got off to a good start as the Italian new ball bowlers provided an early breakthrough to the team in the form of Kushal Bhurtel, who was dismissed after scoring just five runs.

Although the pair of captain Rohit Paudel and Aasif Sheikh added 41 runs for the second wicket, Italy struck back by picking two wickets on the score of 49 to keep the Nepalese batters in check, who forged another partnership for the fourth wicket, which was worth 44 runs involving Aarif Sheikh and Dipendra Singh Airee.

NEP vs ITA: The Collapse

Nepal underwent a collapse once the partnership between Aarif Sheikh and Dipendra Sigh Airee was broken, and lost their last six wickets for 30 runs, thereby getting bowled out for 123 runs inside 20 overs.

As far as Italy’s performance with the ball is concerned, it was led by Crishan Kalugamage, who picked up three wickets in his spell of four overs, giving away just 18 runs at an economy of less than five runs per over, 4.5 to be precise. The spinner received good support from other bowlers like Ben Manenti, who conceded just nine runs in four overs, and JJ Smuts, who ended the game with figures of 1 for 22 in four overs.

NEP vs ITA: The Reply

Italy looked in total control while chasing a target of 124 runs as the opening pair of Mosca brothers remained unbeaten till the end to take Italy to a memorable win by ten wickets, their first in a top-tier ICC tournament in what was only the team’s second match, having kicked off their campaign against Scotland.

If we talk about the individual performances of the Mosca brothers, both of them scored half-centuries, with Anthony Mosca being the more aggressive of the two, playing at a strike rate of 193.75 during his innings of 62 of just 32 balls, including three sixes and five fours. Justin Mosca, on the other hand, was a bit watchful as he batted a strike rate of 136.36 and scored 60 runs in 44 balls.

NEP vs ITA: The Bowling

When it comes to Nepal’s bowling, it had no answers to some intelligence from the Italian batters who kept the opposition under pressure; as a result, Nepal failed to stem the flow of runs at any stage of the Italian batting innings and lost the match by ten wickets in the end.

NEP vs ITA: The Result

Italy have kept their hopes of making it to the Super Eight alive with this win while things have got difficult for Nepal after back-to-back losses.
