“The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career at Al Hilal, and wish the player success in his career,” Al-Hilal said.

Neymar had around seven months remaining on his contract, having joined Al Hilal on a two-year deal with a reported wage of 150m euros (£129.2m) a year.

According to reports, the management at the club were concerned due to the unavailability of the injury-stricken player and were eager to replace him.

He sustained a severe ACL injury during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023. He returned to the field a year later in October last year only to suffer a hamstring issue in his second match back, and has not featured since.

Where is Neymar headed to?

According to reports, the 32-year-old is likely to make a return to his boyhood club Santos. This is the place where he shot to fame, scoring 136 goals in 225 games, before making his high-profile moves to Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Interestingly,  Neymar is said to have agreed to an exponential pay cut compared to the salary he used to get at Al Hilal to facilitate the transfer.

Neymar’s homecoming will be a major boost to Santos who have achieved promotion to the Brazilian Serie A after winning the Serie B title in 2024. This will also help the club gain global attention.

While Santos gave Naymar the stardom at the start of the career, the club can now provide a platform to the star to redeem himself.
