NFC Team Analysis and Profile: Philadelphia Eagles NFL

5 Min Read

In the National Football League (NFL), the Philadelphia Eagles are a team that represents the city of Philadelphia in the NFC (NFL). In 1933, a group of Philadelphia businessmen purchased the rights to play as the Eagles from the remaining members of the disbanded Frankford Yellow Jackets. The first decade of the franchise’s existence could have been more fruitful, as the team only managed to win one or two games in seven of those years. However, hiring Earle (“Greasy”) Neale as head coach in 1941 marked the beginning of a turnaround in Philadelphia.

For 1947, 1948, and 1949 NFL champions that Neale coached, star running back Steve Van Buren was a key contributor. Dick Vermeil was hired as head coach in 1976, and the Eagles (and their fans) responded positively to his fiery coaching style. As a result, the Eagles made the playoffs four consecutive years, from 1978 to 1981, with teams led by quarterback Ron Jaworski and 6-foot-8-inch (2.03 m) wide receiver Harold Carmichael.

On January 21, 2021, Nick Sirianni became the Eagles’ head coach. In exchange for a 2021 third-round draft pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick, the Eagles traded Carson Wentz to the Colts. Wentz was reunited with Frank Reich, the Colts head coach and the Eagles’ offensive coordinator for Wentz’s first two years in Philadelphia, including their Super Bowl–winning season in 2017.

Trading Wentz cost the Eagles $33.8 million. The Eagles picked Heisman Trophy–winning wide receiver DeVonta Smith 10th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft and maneuverer to get an extra first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Eagles’ first Heisman winner in over 50 years was Alabama’s Smith. Smith’s draft brought him back to Alabama’s Jalen Hurts.
