The Santa Clara 49ers are a professional American gridiron football team from Santa Clara, California, and compete in the National Football League (NFL). The 49ers have been crowned champions of the Super Bowl and the National Football Conference (NFC) seven times. In 2011, the 49ers made the playoffs for the first time since 2002, thanks to first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh and a young team centered around a fierce defense. However, their season ended in the NFC championship game against the New York Giants.
