New Orleans Saints History:

  • The Saints first participated in the NFL’s regular season in 1967.
  • Tulane Stadium was the location of the New Orleans Saints’ inaugural contest, which took place on September 17.
  • The New Orleans Saints made a masterful move when they selected quarterback Archie Manning in the first draft round in 1971. He spent time as the starter under center for the Saints. Archie Manning’s three sons—Peyton, Eli, and Eli—all played professional football. Cooper, his third child, would have followed in his father’s footsteps as a professional football player if not for spinal stenosis.
  • The Tulane Stadium, home of the New Orleans Saints, was replaced by the Louisiana Superdome in 1974. After Mercedes-Benz paid for the naming rights, the Superdome became known as Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
  • The New Orleans Saints play in black and old gold.
  • In 1985, Tom Benson, a businessman from New Orleans, purchased the franchise. From 1987 to 1992, the Saints qualified for the postseason four times in six seasons.
  • It was in the playoffs following the 2000 season that the Saints were able to pull off their first victory in team history, a 31-28 victory over the St. Louis Rams.
  • In 2009, quarterback Drew Brees, and head coach Sean Payton helped the New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts 31–17 in Super Bowl XLIV.
