New York is home to a professional American football team called the New York Giants. The New York Football Giants are a National Football League (NFL) team and play in the NFC East division. The Giants are the longest-tenured team in the NFL and the only one from the original group of five that joined the league in 1925 to exist today still. The NFL is where they play football (NFL). Despite the team’s moniker, the New York Giants play their home games nowhere near the Big Apple. East Rutherford, New Jersey, is where their games are held. People in East Rutherford often refer to New York as “home” because it is close to the Hudson River.

New York Giants History:
- Tim Mara reportedly purchased New York’s first professional football team for $500 in 1925. The name “Giants” was “taken” by Tim Mara from the city’s Major League Baseball team. Mara favoured the Giants because he could bring his team to the Polo Grounds, the baseball team’s home field. Originating from the city’s towering architecture, the Giants were given their name.
- The Giants remain a family-run enterprise. Tim Mara, the team’s founder, passed the organization on to his sons Jack and Wellington. Currently, John Mara (Wellington’s son) is the team’s principal owner, representing the third generation of his family to own the Giants.
- The New York Giants are one of the most successful teams in NFL history, having won eight league titles (four in the pre-Super Bowl period and four in the Super Bowl era).
- In 1958, the Giants made it to the NFL Championship Game, but they lost in overtime to the Baltimore Colts, 23-17. The Greatest Game Ever Played gained notoriety and boosted interest in the National Football League because of this contest.
- The New York Giants’ victory in Super Bowl XLII was the final nail in the coffin for the New England Patriots perfect season hopes. In Super Bowl XLVI, four years later, they won yet again by defeating the Patriots.
