Established on July 12, 1930, the team was initially founded in Portsmouth, Ohio. Its former name was Portsmouth Spartans. However, its relocation to Detroit happened in 1934 because of financial issues. The team’s President Is Rod Wood, and General Manager is Brad Holmes. The team had victory in four NFL Championship Games before the Super Bowl period, between 1935 and 1957.
History
There was a small change in the uniform to scarlet and black between 1848 and 1950 under Bo McMillin, the then-head coach. However, the jersey of Lions uniforms has been the same since 1934 when they relocated the team to Detroit. Their uniform included silver pants, helmets, and either white or blue jerseys. The blue that the team used is known as “Honolulu blue.”
The Detroit Lions had several changes in their uniform and jerseys from time to time. They introduced new designs, which were later removed. They also reverted some changes they made to the uniform.
About Uniform
The uniform design has undergone slight changes over the years. These changes included the change in the pattern of silver stripes on jersey sleeves and the colour changes of the numbers on the jersey. Numbers that would help television broadcasters identify footballers were included in 1956 on the jersey sleeves. The addition of White trim to the logo on the jersey was done in 1970, and the addition of silver outlines on white jerseys and blue outlines on the blue jerseys to the numbers happened in 1972. The reversal of the arrangement of colours on the numbers of blue jerseys happened in 1982.
The blue facemasks replaced the blue facemasks in 1984. The players combined blue pants with white jerseys and grey socks in 1998, but this combination was rejected. In 1999, TV numbers were placed on the shoulders. Their throwback uniform in 1994 included solid silver helmets and pants with black cleats, blue socks, and jerseys of Honolulu blue, on which numbers were written in silver numbers and did not have TV numbers. The simple leather helmets also lacked a logo. They put on jerseys of 1950s-style during the Thanksgiving Day games.
In 2003, black trim got added to the jerseys and logo, and the face masks became black. In 2005, black jerseys were introduced as alternate ones but were dropped in 2008. However, in 2009 the throwback uniform became the team’s alternate jersey.
In 2009, the Detroit Lions introduced a new uniform and logo. The typeface was modern, and the logo had a flowing mane with fangs. An announcement was made on February 1, 2017, introducing a new logo and typeface. They also announced that they would remove black from everything used to identify the Lions. So, the border changed to silver, but the previous logo remained.
Again, in April 2017, the Lions introduced new uniforms that included blue pants. The new alternate uniform was an all-silver one, while the facemasks were chrome. The initials “WCF” were added to the left sleeve of the jersey to pay tribute to the team’s owner from 1963 to 2014, William Clay Ford. This addition was a replacement for the “WCF” patch on the left side of the chest added after the death of Ford.
Jersey
Blue jerseys with white pants or white jerseys with blue pants can be worn. The alternative uniform is an all-silver one. The Lions were seen wearing white pants and white uniforms on September 20, 2021, as they played against the Green Bay Packers. The team members wore these white pants with no black stripes during the “scarlet and black” period during the seasons of 1948 and 1949.
