The NFC South Division’s Buccaneers have had a fascinating history of piracy over four decades. Even though the Pewter Pirates have had their share of ups and downs, nothing can compare to their success in 2002-03. They were underdogs against the Oakland Raiders and legendary coach John Gruden, but the Bucs prevailed, sending the Raiders to their first-ever Super Bowl.

Vinny Testaverde and James Wilder, the franchise’s all-time leader in passing and running, are both former Tampa Bay Bucs players who have left an indelible impression on the team. New talents like Jameis Winston (2013 Heisman winner) and Mike Evans (former Texas A&M wide receiver) are helping to set the stage for future success for the Bucs. Since joining the NFL, the Buccaneers’ jerseys have had a standard layout with four colors: black, orange, red, and pewter.

About Uniform

For the 1978 season, the home jerseys of the Bucs are primarily orange. The red piping along the sleeve stripes and the white numbers make this shirt stand out. The Bucco Bruce logo is shown on both sides of the team members’ white helmets. The pants have crimson borders around orange stripes that run down the legs. During this stage, the squad switches to a white belt.

In 1997, there were significant updates to the team’s uniform and emblem. The crimson flag with the skull and crossed swords is the new primary symbol of the Bucco Bruce organization, which formerly used a lion. Instead of using the primary colors of red and black, the away jersey is white with black trim around the red numbers. A pirate ship, the team’s alternate logo, has replaced the numbers on the back of the jerseys on the shoulders.

In 2012, the Bucs changed to a red primary jersey with black trim. Each player’s jersey features the official NFL emblem sewn into the lower half of the V-neck. The helmets and pants of the team are primarily a pewter color.

2014 sees the debut of pewter and orange elements to complement the team’s traditional red jerseys. The “Bucs” wordmark now appears on the left sleeve in place of the old logo. Yet another alteration was made to the jerseys’ lettering: a shift in font style. A white shirt with red text and black and orange trim is a 2015 away jersey. Each half of the collar is either white or pewter in color. The Buccaneers’ pants are white, with no other color, which simplifies their uniform. In 2016, the Bucs upgraded their iconic Color Rush jerseys from their 2015 Thursday Night Football meeting with the St. Louis Rams.

For the 2023 season, the creamsicle and white throwback outfits will make a comeback. From 1976 to 1996, the Buccaneers utilized uniform sets that included the creamsicle color scheme and the “Bucco Bruce” pirate logo on the helmets. Tampa Bay wore the Creamsicle jerseys as throwbacks from 2009 to 2012. However, the set was retired once the team switched to new uniforms in 2013.
