The Norway Chess 2025 again lived up to its expectations and delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in the tournament’s history. Local hero Magnus Carlsen secured a record-extending seventh title after a tense final round.
The tournament, renowned for its elite double-round robin format and innovative Armageddon tiebreakers, featured the world’s top grandmasters, including the reigning world champion Gukesh D, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, etc. Meanwhile, the women’s section, running in parallel, saw elite competition between Anna Muzychuk, Koneru Humpy, Ju Wenjun, etc.
Norway Chess 2025 Final Round

Norway Chess 2025 Men’s Section
The tenth and final round of the Norway Chess 2025 saw an intense battle as the standings were razor-thin. Carlsen led the table with 15 points while Gukesh was behind just half a point. Caruana and Nakamura trailed behind, still in contention.
The stakes were high and clear for Gukesh D. To win the title, he needed to win the last game against Carlsen, while Carlsen needed to draw in order for Gukesh to win.
The round, however, did not go as planned. Gukesh, under intense pressure, faced Caruana and faced himself in a difficult position. He ultimately resigned with only two seconds left on the clock and was visibly upset as his hopes for the Norway Chess 2025 title went away.
Meanwhile, Carlsen only needed a draw to win the title, however, he could not win the Armageddon tiebreaker but still secured 1 point with the draw. And that was enough for him to win.

Norway Chess 2025 Women’s Section
Meanwhile, in the women’s section, Anna Muzychuk was already leading the board while there were very few chances of Koneru Humpy or Lei Tingjie to win the title as they trailed behind her. Anna lost the Armageddon tiebreaker against Vaishali Rameshbabu, but still secured one point, which was enough to claim the Norway Chess 2025 title.
On the other hand, Humpy failed to seize a decisive victory, ending her chances of winning the title. Meanwhile, Lei Tingjie turned the tables with a decisive win and secured 3 points that earned her the second position while Koneru Humpy finished third.
