Novak Djokovic has backed his opponent Carlos Alcaraz to win many more grand slams, however, he took a cheeky dig by saying that he hopes that he doesn’t start his run by defeating him in the much-awaited Wimbledon 2024 final on Sunday, July 14th.
Djokovic and Alcaraz are all set for a rematch of last year’s final showdown. Djokovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to reach the final round. Last year, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in an exciting five-set match.
Since then, Djokovic has defeated Alcaraz in the US Open final. After his win over Musetti, Djokovic complimented Alcaraz for maintaining a balanced life both on and off the court. Djokovic has praised Alcaraz as one of the greatest 21-year-olds the sport has witnessed and has backed him to win many more titles in the future.
“He is a great example as a young player that has a well-balanced life on and off the court. He has great values in his family and a lot of charisma.”
“He is deservedly one of the greatest 21-year-olds we have seen in this sport. We will see a lot of him in the future no doubt.”
“He is going to win many more Grand Slams, but hopefully in two days not this one.”
Novak Djokovic highlighted the fact that Alcaraz had already beaten him at Wimbledon last year and he is expecting the same energy from the Spaniard this time around. Hailing the Spaniard as a complete player, the Serbian said:
“He has already beaten me here in a thrilling five-setter. I don’t expect anything less than that (on Sunday).”
“He is complete as a player as they come. It is going to take my best ability to beat him.”
Notably, Alcaraz and Djokovic will lock horns in the final on July 14. If the Serbian manages to win on Sunday, then he will level with Roger Federer for most titles at Wimbledon.
